Holiday weekends, especially the ones that bracket the summer months, tend to be stress tests for the tech media. With the p roliferati on of smart phones, social media aggr egators, and of course the Twitter cl onestakes, it’s now trivial to get a snapshot of what is going on throughout the “ ;time off. ” Is nothing going on? Has the [...]

Graffiti: The movie
I am a crotchety old man about graffiti. 99.9% of them ? and, as usual, all my statistics have been authentica ted by having been made up ? impose an adolescent narcissism . But I also think: (a) I don't really understand the cultural p ositioning behind it, (b) some of it is ...

Announcing Tech.NewsJ unk.Com
There's a new site on the net today: http://tec h.newsjunk .com/ It's the c ounterpart to the political NewsJunk, which is focused on news of the 2008 p residentia l campaign. The Tech site is focused on technology product news. I created the site because I wasn't getting enough news about products. It's that simple. I'm interested in the other stuff too, the finance, trends, parties, puppets -- but that's adequately covered on TechMeme. What wasn't getting through is the stuff I, as a product dev
Smith and Foulkes - Cinema Told Through Bunny Rabbits
Just found out about these folks in a review of the upcoming Animation Show 4. In America, t hey’ re best-known product was the Coca-Cola ad “ Videogame, ” which I un abashedly love. In clicking around their film ography (requires a little digging), I found &# 8220;Grand Classics&# 8221; an engaging retelling of the history of cinema with a rabbit as a [...]

Eating The IT Elephant - Book Review
Achieving Project success over the last 30 years has been difficult! Reports on various studies released over the last 5 years state as little as 30% of complex projects succeed. Although this number is climbing, very large projects (300 ? 500 man years) have been the least successful in succeed ing, with one report in 2007 [...]
Telephone
I have a telephone instrument on my desk. I rarely use it. Most of the calls I get are re cruiters, evil telem arketers, and wrong numbers. I mostly communicat e with people using email, im, and the old reliable f2f. The office phone is as useful to me as a typewriter , Lamson tube, or telegraph key.

Don't hide or disable menu items
A long time ago, it became fashionabl e, even re commended, to disable menu items when they could not be used. Don't do this. Users see the disabled menu item that they want to click on, and are left entirely without a clue of what they are supposed to do to get the menu item to work. Instead, leave the menu item enabled. If there's some reason you can't complete the action, the menu item can display a message telling the user why. Not loving your job? Visit the Joel on Software Job Board: Great s
WaveMaker Review
There are a number of tools out there which aspire to make building Rich Internet A pplication s easier. Some of them focus on server side logic, like Oracle. Others focus on a native runtime on the client like Adobe Flex and Microsoft. Still others focus on JavaScript on the client. This includes a lot of what Google does, and companies like WaveMaker. In this article, I take a look a WaveMaker and its vision for building a richer client exp erience.
